Palatine

Palatine’s history stretches back to the early 19th century. Soldiers fought Pottawatomie Indians in the Black Hawk War, which ended in 1832. Settlers from New England, hearing about the fertile land from the returning soldiers, traveled the old Indian trails to stake their claims to the land. In 1853, the Illinois and Wisconsin Railroad made its way to the Deer Grove Trading Post. This railroad eventually failed but was followed by another known today as Union Pacific. A thriving settlement grew around the railroad station. The Village of Palatine was incorporated on March 19, 1866.

The Palatine Historical Society was founded in 1955. In 1976, with the help of the Palatine Public Library and the Palatine Park District, a century-old house on East Palatine Road was purchased and later restored by the Historical Society. The house, built in 1873, was named the George Clayson House to honor the original builder. Artifacts, exhibits, books, records and photographs of Palatine’s past are displayed in the house.

Palatine real estate consists of a variety of property types at prices to suit nearly any budget. Single-family homes, condominiums and townhouses are available in a number of quiet communities. Home prices vary depending on size, amenities and location. Some larger homes are located on large treed lots and offer water frontage.

The Palatine Public Library is ranked among the top five libraries in the nation serving populations between 50,000 and 100,000 people. The library is used very frequently by area residents-a factor which contributes directly to its high ranking by the American Public Library Rating Index. The library system offers all the usual library services as well as Internet access and bookmobile service.

The Palatine Park District oversees the majority of local parks and recreational areas. The Community Center has an indoor track, gymnasium, locker rooms, a weight room and classrooms. Birchwood Park Recreation Center offers a gymnasium, a 50-meter pool, and fitness classes. The Family Aquatic Center features water slides, a sand play area, a six-lane lap pool, and a large lawn area. The Palatine Horse Stables provide English riding lessons and boarding. The scenic Palatine Trail connects neighborhood parks, the 18-hole Palatine Hills Golf Course, Deer Grove Forest Preserve and William Rainey Harper Community College.

The Salt Creek Park District offers summer camps and pre-school programs along with a variety of activities for all ages. Boating, fishing and jogging are popular at Twin Lakes Recreation Area. Also at Twin Lakes are a driving range, a nine-hole golf course, four sand volleyball courts, a shuffleboard court, horseshoe pits and a playground with two picnic pavilions.

More than a century and a half after its founding, the Village of Palatine continues to attract modern-day settlers who come for new opportunities just as the original settlers arrived before them. Lovely parks, excellent schools, affordable real estate and a thriving economy make Palatine the perfect home for residents of all ages.
